Mobile sheep station wins Coleraine brothers innovation award

A mobile sheep station has won the $4000 major award for innovation at Sheepvention.

Coleraine brothers, John and Tom Austin, designed the Elvin Mobile Sheep Station for their own use, and after its popularity at Sheepvention last year realised that it was a marketable product.

With improvements made and a better model built, the station was ready for this year’s innovation competition.

The station works using a vertically elevated conveyor belt which lifts the sheep so they are suspended above the ground.

Once suspended the sheep can’t move which allows for easy drenching, classing, injection and crutching.

“It has many features, it can separate ewes and lambs while the ewe is drenched,” Tom said.

This works as the conveyor belt will hold up the ewe while the lamb falls through and can run to a separate yard.

“A lot of people have been really impressed,” he said. “It’s time efficient and it can drench 2000 sheep per hour.”

Other winners included Murray Smythe, of Broadwater, who won the District Encouragement Award, the Innovative Ideas Award and the Farm Aids Class.

Mr Smythe invented a multi-purpose bin for a front end loader.

“It can be used for feeding grain out, spreading fertilisers and sandblasting.

“You can feed grain and hay to sheep using the roll feeder.”
